Sharks edge Wild for 10th straight road victory
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jonathan Cheechoo scored a third period goal that led the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild and a franchise-record 10th consecutive road win on Monday.
The Sharks joined four other teams for second on the all-time NHL consecutive road victories list. Only the Detroit Red Wings, who won 12 successive road games in 2006, have more.
"It is quite a team accomplishment," Sharks assistant coach Rob Zettler told reporters. "We keep things simple on the road and going to the net with our big forwards.
"It's tough to do on the road and the way we've been doing it has been awesome."
Steve Bernier and Kyle McLaren gave the Sharks a 2-0 lead after two periods before the Wild charged back with third-period goals from Dominic Moore and Mark Parrish to level the score with 15:22 expired.
Cheechoo, however, took just 10 seconds to score his fifth goal of the season and give San Jose the victory.
Sharks netminder Evgeni Nabokov made 19 saves.
* Rick Nash's hat-trick powered the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-2 home win over the Edmonton Oilers. Nash's short-handed goal in the second period gave Columbus a 2-1 lead.
He added two three-period goals, getting a powerplay score at 16:39 and an empty-netter with nine seconds left in the game. The three goals boosted his total to 21 this season.
* The Boston Bruins snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 home win over the Atlanta Thrashers as brothers Mark and Colin Stuart both scored for their respective sides.
Colin had given Atlanta a 2-0 first-period lead before Mark put Boston ahead 3-2 in the second period.
* Marc-Andre Bergeron scored twice on power plays as the New York Islanders beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on the road.
All five goals were scored in the second period.
* Erik Johnson and Lee Stempniak scored third-period goals while Manny Legace made 31 saves in the St. Louis Blues' 2-0 shutout of the Detroit Red Wings.
It was the first time this season Detroit failed to score.
