Sat Nov 14, 2009 6:32am EST
PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Nov 14 (Reuters) - A blast occured in the Pakistani city of Peshawar on Saturday, police said, but there was no immediate word on its cause or if there were any casualties.

Residents said the explosion was near a police checkpost.

The city, near the Afghan border, has been targeted several times since the army began an offensive against the Taliban in South Waziristan last month and militants stepped up retaliatory attacks. (Additional reporting by Augustine Antony; writing by Robert Birsel; editing by Robin Pomeroy)
