Davenport knee injury forces Stanford withdrawal

STANFORD, California (Reuters) - A re-occurrence of a knee injury that ended her Wimbledon campaign has forced former world number one Lindsay Davenport out of the Stanford Classic on Monday.

Davenport injured her right knee in practice prior to Wimbledon and while she won her first match at the grass court grand slam, she pulled out prior to her second round match.

"Unfortunately my knee has not healed sufficiently since Wimbledon to allow me to compete," Davenport said.

She will be replaced in the draw by a lucky loser.

Davenport, who returned to the tour last August after giving birth to her first child, has clawed her way back into the world top 30, but has only played one match since April.

The 32-year-old Olympic gold medalist is scheduled to play in Los Angeles next week and at next month's Beijing Olympics.

Wimbledon finalist Serena Williams is the tournament's top seed, followed by champion Anna Chakvetadze of Russia.
