Bruins get long-awaited road win over Islanders
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Boston Bruins ended nearly six years of frustration on Monday with a 3-1 over the Islanders in New York.
The win, courtesy of goals from Glen Murray, Petteri Nokelainen and Chuck Kobasew and 33 saves from Tim Thomas, was the Bruins' first at the Nassau Coliseum since December 22, 2001.
"We did what we had to do," Bruins coach Claude Julien told reporters. "We had some timely goals (on) the powerplay."
Murray got the Bruins off to a 1-0 start with a powerplay goal in the opening period. Nokelainen's second-period goal and a third-period score by Kobasew on the powerplay made it 3-0.
The Islanders finally scored with 1:51 left in the game. Chris Campoli got the goal on the powerplay but the Islanders still slumped to their third consecutive loss.
"What's wrong with our offense? A lot," coach Ted Nolan told reporters.
"It basically comes down to being a little more greedy, a little bit hungrier, have a better effort. We're OK, but OK doesn't cut it."
*Niklas Hagman's shootout goal gave the Dallas Stars a 2-1 road victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Hagman scored off a backhander against Columbus netminder Pascal Leclaire in the fifth round of the shootout.
*Cory Stillman scored twice and Cam Ward made 28 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes shut out the New York Rangers in a 4-0 road win.
*Kris Letang broke a 1-1 tie with a third-period powerplay score as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-1.
