Dolphins name Chargers offensive coordinator as new coach

    Fri Jan 19, 2007 6:39pm EST

MIAMI (Reuters) - The Miami Dolphins on Friday hired San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron as their new head coach.

    Sports

Cameron, who signed a four-year contract, replaces Nick Saban, who left the Dolphins after two years to return to the college ranks at the University of Alabama.

With Cameron as offensive coordinator, the Chargers led the National Football League in scoring during the regular season with a 30.8 average.

San Diego, led by an NFL-record 31 touchdowns by running back LaDainian Tomlinson, captured the AFC West with a 14-2 record but was tripped up by the New England Patriots 24-21 during last week's divisional playoffs.

Cameron, 45, has spent the last five seasons piloting the Chargers' high-powered offense, a unit that finished third and fifth in scoring in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Before joining the Chargers, Cameron was the head coach at Indiana University for five years.

The Dolphins were 9-7 in Saban's first year but stumbled to 6-10 this season.
