Devils power to 7-3 win over Flyers
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The New Jersey Devils scored five powerplay goals on the way to a dominating 7-3 road win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
New Jersey tied the team record for powerplay goals in a game and came within one of their franchise mark, established before the team moved from Colorado in 1982.
"Top to bottom it was a good game for us," Devils left wing Zach Parise told reporters.
"The powerplay was working tonight.
"In all aspects of the game we did really well. In our own zone we played well and we were skating which cause them to take a lot of penalties," added Parise, who scored his 17th and 18th goals in the win.
The Devils have won their last five games against the Flyers and are 15-1-1 against them over the last 17.
Philadelphia coach John Stevens was predictably disappointed with the result, particularly since the Flyers had come into the game on a 10-1-1 roll.
"I was excited about this opportunity," he said.
"I was kind of tired of hearing: 'You guys are playing great but here comes the Devils.' We made that fear come true."
Devils defenseman Johnny Oduya had a goal and three assists for the first multi-point effort of his 117 NHL career games. Patrik Elias also scored twice for the Devils, who moved into first place in the Atlantic Division with the win.
*The Montreal Canadiens hammered Boston 8-2, chalking up their sixth consecutive win of the season against the Bruins.
*The Florida Panthers scored a 5-3 home victory over the slumping Ottawa Senators, who have lost five of their last six.
*New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist had only 14 saves to make in recording his seventh shutout of the season in a 4-0 home victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.
*Chris Osgood had his third shutout of the season as the Detroit Red Wings posted a 3-0 road victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
*Craig Conroy had the winning goal for Calgary as the Flames moved into first place in the Northwest with a 2-1 home victory over the Minnesota Wild.
*Backup goalie Dan Ellis had a shutout as the visiting Nashville Predators recorded a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.
