Mets rally to beat Reds, win 10th in a row
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The New York Mets scored their 10th consecutive victory on Thursday with a 10-8 road win over the Cincinnati Reds.
The Mets (52-44) scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to move within one win of tying a team record for consecutive victories. They are now tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the National League East.
"It means a lot to be able to get back in this thing when we were one of the more inconsistent teams in baseball for the first two months of the season," third baseman David Wright told reporters.
"We have to continue to ride this momentum and get it done."
Wright delivered a two-run homer off Cincinnati closer Francisco Cordero in the ninth to tie the game. All Star Wright was 2-for-5 with four RBIs.
Carlos Delgado followed with an RBI single to put the Mets ahead 9-8 and Fernando Tatis tacked on an RBI double.
The Mets' winning streak has been based on exceptional pitching, but on Thursday it was their bats that got the job done.
Delgado also had a two-run homer in the fourth while Tatis homered in the sixth.
Mets starter Johan Santana lasted just four innings, allowing five runs. He surrendered a fourth-inning homer to Edwin Encarnacion. The Reds are now 46-51.
