NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Yankees kept their season alive with an 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians in their American League Divisional Series playoff, with Johnny Damon reviving a moribund offense with three hits and four runs.

Damon's three-run homer capped a four-run fifth inning that gave the Yanks a 5-3 lead on their way to a victory, denying the Indians a sweep of the best-of-five series.

The Yankees, who had hit .121 with eight hits in the series coming into the game, erupted for 11 hits to support winning pitcher Phil Hughes, who took over from starter Roger Clemens.

Clemens left in the third inning with a strained hamstring.

Game Four of the series, led 2-1 by Cleveland, will be played at Yankee Stadium on Monday.
