SYDNEY, April 12 (Reuters) - Australian drugs firm Sigma Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (SIP.AX) requested its shares be placed on a trading halt on Thursday ahead of an announcement.

"A trading halt is necessary as Sigma expects to make an announcement in relation to a significant development," the company said in a statement.

Australian healthcare companies are in a flurry of takeover activity and speculation, and Sigma has said previously it was in the market for future acquisitions.
