TOKYO, June 15 (Reuters) - Gold steadied below $940 on Monday
after it fell in the previous session on the back of a strong
dollar rally which led to a shift of funds out of commodities.
FUNDAMENTALS
* Gold XAU= was at $937.70 per ounce at 0009 GMT, down 0.02
percent from New York's notional close of $937.90.
* U.S. gold futures for August delivery GCQ9 were at
$937.30 per ounce, down 0.4 percent.
* The world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, the
SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), said its holdings were steady at 1,132.15
tonnes as of June 12, unchanged from the previous business day.

* Speculators boosted their holdings in U.S. gold futures
with noncommercial investors net long on 189,674 contracts of
gold futures in the week to June 9, compared to a net long of
187,340 contracts in the week to June 2. [ID:nN1282010]
MARKET NEWS
* The dollar rose broadly on Monday as a drop in oil prices
late last week prompted investors to buy the greenback and take
profits from gains made in recent weeks in commodities-linked
currencies such as the Australian dollar. [USD/]
* Japan's benchmark Nikkei average .N225 fell 0.4 percent.

* The Dow moved into positive territory for the year for the
first time since early January on Friday, lifted by defensive
sectors like pharmaceuticals. [.N]
* U.S. consumer confidence this month fell short of
expectations and a record drop in euro zone industrial production
dampened signs from Asia of a nascent global economic recovery.
