TOKYO, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T) said on Wednesday it plans a global commercial launch of its "Home" 3D virtual online community service for PlayStation 3 users on Dec. 11, in a move to drive demand for its struggling game console.

The new service is aimed at giving users a place to interact with other PS3 users.

As in the "Second Life" virtual world, Home users create online characters or avatars. They can chat with other visitors, play games and customise their own sites in the virtual world.

Ahead of the Thursday launch, Sony, locked in a three-way battle with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.OS) in the video game industry, has been offering Home's beta service for a limited number of users. (Reporting by Kiyoshi Takenaka)
