BOJ's Fukui says prices may fall into minus

Wed Feb 21, 2007 8:14pm EST

TOKYO, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Toshihiko Fukui said on Thursday there was a possibility that prices could fall into negative territory.

"Currently, price moves are near zero percent. However, due mainly to the effects of oil prices, it is possible that prices could fall into minus figures," Fukui told parliament.

The BOJ on Wednesday raised rates to 0.50 from 0.25 percent, still the lowest among the world's most industrialised countries but the highest level for Japan in more than a decade.
