KDDI, Willcom may win Japan WiMAX licenses -Nikkei

TOKYO, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Japan is likely to grant licenses to supply high-speed Wireless Internet access to mobile phone operator KDDI Corp (9433.T) and Carlyle-controlled [CYL.UL] handy-phone firm Willcom Inc, the Nikkei said on Wednesday.

A KDDI spokesman declined to comment, saying that the application process had just begun.

KDDI and Willcom are competing with mobile carriers NTT DoCoMo Inc (9437.T) and Softbank Corp (9984.T) for licenses for two 2.5 GHz band frequencies allowing WiMAX connections.

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) enables quick Internet access on laptops and other mobile devices while on the move. (Reporting by Mayumi Negishi)
