Japan LDP official: expect BOJ to share govt goal

Thu Feb 15, 2007 9:24pm EST

TOKYO, Feb 16 (Reuters) - The secretary general of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Hidenao Nakagawa, said on Friday he expects the Bank of Japan to decide on monetary policy while sharing the government's goal on economic policy.

In a news conference, Nakagawa also said that in interpreting data showing stronger-than-expected October-December gross domestic product growth, the government should take into account the fact it came after tame growth in the July-September quarter.

Japan's economy expanded at an annualised pace of 4.8 percent in the last three months of 2006, much higher than the previous quarter's 0.3 percent growth and hitting the strongest pace in nearly three years, government data showed on Thursday.

The BOJ will hold its next policy meeting on Feb. 20-21.
