Euro hits 2-year high vs dollar, record high vs yen

Wed Apr 11, 2007 9:54pm EDT

TOKYO, April 12 (Reuters) - The euro struck a two-year high against the dollar and a fresh record high against the yen on Thursday, getting a boost on hopes the European Central Bank will signal the need for higher interest rates later in the day.

The euro's jump also coincided with the Australian dollar surging to a 17-year high against the U.S. dollar after strong jobs data helped solidify expectations for the Reserve Bank of Australia to lift rates further.

The euro jumped to $1.3469 EUR= on electronic trading platform EBS, triggering automatic buy orders around $1.3450. The single currency jumped to 160.75 yen EURJPY=R, hitting an all-time high since its launch in 1999 for a third straight day.
