Brewers win NL wild card, AL Central title up in air
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Milwaukee Brewers beat out the New York Mets on Sunday for the National League's last playoff spot, but it will take at least one more game to decide the American League's post-season lineup.
The Brewers won the NL wild-card spot when they defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on the final day of the regular season to claim their first playoff berth since 1982.
The Mets, who had been tied with the Brewers in the wild-card race, fell 4-2 to the Florida Marlins in the final game at Shea Stadium, which is to be replaced by a new stadium. The loss eliminated the Mets from the postseason.
In the American League, the Chicago White Sox kept their playoff hopes alive with a 5-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians.
The win, coupled with the Minnesota Twins's 6-0 shutout of the Kansas City Royals, left the White Sox a half-game behind the Twins in the AL Central Division race.
The White Sox will make up an earlier rained-out game against Detroit on Monday in Chicago and if they win that game, they will play the Twins in Chicago on Tuesday for the Central Division championship and a spot in the postseason.
