Garcia wins the HSBC Champions after Shanghai playoff

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Spain's Sergio Garcia won the rain-disrupted HSBC Champions after a playoff against Britain's Oliver Wilson Monday to overtake Phil Mickelson as world number two.

The 28-year-old, who carded a final round four-under-par 68 to finish the tournament at 14-under alongside Wilson, slotted home a seven-foot birdie putt while his rival could only manage a par five on his third go at the 18th.

Overnight leader Wilson, who hit a 70 in his final round, is still seeking his first victory on the European Tour after finishing second for the fifth time this year.

Defending champion Mickelson finished seventh and will cede the number two ranking behind Tiger Woods that he has held for one year and eight weeks since September 3, 2007.

Players had returned to the course for a fifth day to complete the $5 million event after rain washed out all play on Friday and three hours of Saturday's action.

The event is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, the PGA Tour of Australasia, South Africa's Sunshine Tour and the China Golf Association.
