Democrats push to get auto plan to White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic congressional negotiators pushed on Monday to complete their $15 billion proposal to help the ailing U.S. auto industry and get it to the White House for consideration, aides said.

"The goal is to get it to them today," one Democratic aide said on condition of anonymity. "It's pretty close to being completed."

Democratic leaders aim to get a such a bill, one providing automakers short-term loans, passed by the Senate and House of Representatives this week, and then sent to President George W. Bush to sign into law.

"We're making sure that the language (of the draft) is acceptable to the Democratic leadership," the aide added.
