Dish Network DVR at CES has Slingbox technology
LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Satellite television provider Dish Network Corp plans to introduce a new digital video recorder that lets people watch their favorite television shows on any Internet-enabled device.
The new high-definition DVR, on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is embedded with Slingbox technology and will be available to Dish subscribers for $199 from this spring, Chief Executive Charlie Ergen told a news conference on Thursday.
Integrating the Slingbox technology into Dish's DVR increases the options that subscribers have to control and watch programing, Ergen said. Shares of Dish were up 10.9 percent at $13.33 on Nasdaq in afternoon trading.
In addition to their TV sets, people can watch recorded programs and sports events on their "desktops at home, their laptops on the road, their smartphones, iPhones, Blackberry, and more," he said.
The new ViP 922 box will also have the online SlingGuide, which lets people search for, record and watch content from a personal computer or mobile phone.
The box has been developed by an EchoStar Holding Corp subsidiary for Dish, which is the third-largest U.S. pay-TV provider.
EchoStar, a sister company of Dish that bought Slingbox creator Sling Media in 2007, is willing to sell the integrated DVR technology to competitors, Ergen said.
Dish, formerly known as EchoStar Communications Corp, spun off its technology assets in 2007, including its set-top box division, to create EchoStar Holding Corp.
