WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama welcomed passage by the House of Representatives of an $825 billion economic stimulus package that marked his first major legislative victory.

Obama said the measure would pump money into the ailing U.S. economy and added that he hoped the legislation could be strengthened as it moves to the Senate.

"The plan now moves to the Senate, and I hope that we can continue to strengthen this plan before it gets to my desk," Obama said in a statement.
