Glavine offloaded by the Braves
ATLANTA (Reuters) - Ten-times National League All-Star pitcher Tom Glavine was surprisingly released by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old, a 305-game winner who was returning from elbow and shoulder surgery, had signed a one-year contract with the Braves in February for the 2009 season.
"We appreciate and respect everything Tom has done for and brought to the Atlanta Braves organization and our fans," the team's executive vice president and general manager Frank Wren said in a statement.
"His accomplishments for our club during his hall of fame career is a measure of his dedication that we will always respect and admire. We wish him nothing but the very best."
A twice National League Cy Young Award winner, Glavine had surgery on his left elbow in August last year and made four rehabilitation starts this season.
After throwing six scoreless innings for Class-A Rome on Tuesday, Glavine had said he was ready to pitch again in the majors.
He has a 305-203 career record and a 3.54 ERA in 682 games, including 244 wins in a Braves uniform.
