UK's Brown hailed with applause as he addresses lawmakers
LONDON (Reuters) - Labour members of parliament cheered and banged tables as Prime Minister Gordon Brown arrived to address a meeting of his party on Monday, suggesting he may enjoy more support than critics have suggested.
As Brown entered the private meeting in parliament with a grin on his face, there were loud cheers, applause and banging of tables, witnesses said.
Brown has been under intense pressure for the past week, following the resignation of six senior ministers, a government reshuffle and a rout in European elections, in which Labour took its smallest share of a national vote since 1910.
Rebels in the Labour Party have been reportedly canvassing support for a letter calling on Brown to stand down.
