Terminator tops UK 2009 box office openings

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - "Terminator Salvation," the fourth film in the franchise and the first not to star Arnold Schwarzenegger, set the UK box office record for the year so far, Screen International said on Wednesday.

Starring Christian Bale as leader of the resistance against the cyborgs, "Terminator Salvation" took 6.94 million pounds ($11.4 million) over the weekend, almost a million pounds more than previous record holder "Angels and Demons."

It knocked Ben Stiller's comedy sequel "Night At The Museum 2" into second place.

Director Sam Raimi's chiller about curses and mayhem in the banking world, "Drag Me to Hell," was down one place at three while Angels and Demons, the follow-up to "The Da Vinci Code," slipped down a spot to four.

"Star Trek," the remake of the classic 1960s TV series, dropped a place to fifth.

"Last Chance Harvey" with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, was new at six with the tale of an unlikely couple falling in love in London.

Spooky animated movie "Coraline," was down two places at seven, just above Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie," starring Miley Cyrus, which slipped from six to eight.

"12 Rounds," with wrestler John Cena causing mayhem in New Orleans, was down two spots at nine while "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" fell to 10 from eight.
