House Democrats' bill would cover 97 pct of Americans by 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Democratic-written bill to overhaul U.S. healthcare would provide insurance coverage of about 97 percent of Americans by 2019, the chairman of the House Health and Labor Committee said on Tuesday.

George Miller, a California Democrat who heads the panel, said the broad coverage was an important part of the 1,018-page bill.

Miller and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at a news conference to unveil the bill, also said that lowering costs was essential for U.S. healthcare reform.
