Radcliffe to test marathon fitness with New York run
BERLIN (Reuters) - Marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe is to run in the New York half marathon on Sunday to discover if she is fit enough to race at the world championships in Berlin the following weekend.
The 35-year-old Briton had foot surgery in March and has not raced since winning the New York marathon in November.
"Recently, my training has started to go very well. I'm definitely ready to run a half marathon and the NYC half marathon will give me important feedback about where I am," Radcliffe said in a statement.
"After the race in New York I will consult with my coaching and medical teams and we will make the final determination as to whether I am ready to run in Berlin. It is certainly my hope to compete there."
Radcliffe, world champion over 26.2 miles in 2005, is one of Britain's few gold medal prospects and the country's athletics chief, Charles van Commenee, said he supported her decision.
"She's showing great creativity and she's an extreme person who produces extreme results and comes up with extreme solutions and I've given her space to make her own decisions," he said.
