China launches new global positioning satellite

BEIJING | Sat Jul 31, 2010 11:30pm EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - China took a further step on Sunday toward ending its dependence on U.S. satellites to provide navigation and positioning services.

A rocket carrying the fifth of a planned array of 35 orbiters blasted off from the Xichang space launch center in Sichuan, southwest China, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Beijing started a drive to end its reliance on the U.S. Global Positioning System in 2000, when it sent an experimental pair of positioning satellites into orbit.

China's necklace of satellites aims to provide navigation, time and short message services in the Asia-Pacific region before 2012 and will be capable of offering global navigation by 2020, Xinhua said.

The system, codenamed "COMPASS," will be crucial for the transport and oil exploration industries as well as for weather and disaster forecasting, telecommunications and public security, the news agency said.

China once again flexing it’s considerable muscles. Reducing still further any dependence on the US.Bit by bit the importance of the United States is being whittled away. Hard to get your head round. What next I wonder?

What is next is their bubble bursting
and come crawling back to US and its
allies. That’s what’s next. And
what China and its current short-
sighted investors don’t realize is
that all the smart money already
started selling and shorting China in
full correct anticipation of China
crumbling.

Have you read just how much China is importing from Korea, Europe, and USA?
So they put up a satellite where the
most of the parts and technology came
from Korea and USA and will continue to
come from those two main countries. Please.

Great news China, the world is watching you with anticipation of a better world.
Your showing the world how stable government can prosper and grow. Hopefully the US will see that their 22nd amendment has done nothing more than de stabilise a once great nation.

China doesn’t control crap. You are way way outside looking in. China is a crap country on the verge of crumbling down. It’s damn hilarious reading people trashing USA and propping up China when China is more artificially built up than even USA. China is will fall… and will fall big. Because China controls the world, they can’t even make a decent cell phone chip or a computer chip? Sorry… they are not making a brand of their own… no. They are busy making chips for American and Korean companies. OK? They are and will always just be a source of cheap labor. And once that single advantage goes away… India will beat up China next.

Congratulations China.
Check & balance for the peace of the world.
just don’t be a next bully or fear monger.
Next target is to achieve soft power – earn respect from other countries on human rights/quality of life – those are the real measure of a great country.

What is with this 007 guy? If you so despise China, why do you even bother to comment? People have been the China falling story since 1990s, and it’s kinda getting old. And your notion that China is buying satellite tech from Korea is simply ludicrous. Newsflash: their attempt to send a satellite into space has just failed for the second time, even with the help of Russian rocket experts. And I don’t mean Koreans are inept, I’m just saying it’s very easy to point out others’ problems, which does not in anyway show you are smart or anything.

China failing stories getting kind of old? What about the China is going to be the world ruler soon stories, those are even worse. 007 can say what he wants, last I checked this is a USA website where in the USA you can actually have the freedom to voice your opinion. I think you Chinese need to grow up and learn how to handle criticism. Is this the result of the one child policy where you have a bunch of spoiled brats who when they don’t get their way or receive some criticism turn into crazed lunatics. If you don’t like it Randy you don’t need to come here either, you could always stay at the Chinese sites where you can hear what you want all day long.
