U.S., China must resist protectionist leanings- Wang
WASHINGTON, June 18 (Reuters) - China is committed to carrying out further reforms and opening its economy but hopes for patience from trading partners such as the United States, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said on Wednesday.
Wang said China needed to grapple with challenges including a large gap between its urban and rural areas, which made it difficult to achieve its goal of "rapid but sound" growth, meaning it could not go too quickly on reform.
In a speech to U.S. business groups, he said there were protectionist voices in both countries, but such tendencies had to be resisted.
"What matters is that we address our differences in a pragmatic way," Wang said. "Let the facts speak for themselves." (Reporting by Jason Subler and Paul Eckert; Editing by Neil Stempleman)
