Zimbabwe vote recount to affect only 23 constituencies

Sat Apr 12, 2008 8:13pm EDT
HARARE, April 13 (Reuters) - Ballots from 23 constituencies in Zimbabwe's parliamentary and presidential elections will be recounted in a week's time, an electoral official said on Sunday.

Clarifying a report in the state-owned Sunday Mail newspaper, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) official, who asked not to be named, said: "The recount is not for the whole election, but for the specific 23 constituencies mentioned."

No result has been released from the March 29 presidential election but the recount raises the prospect that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change's victory in the parliamentary vote could be overturned.
