AMSTERDAM, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Shares in Dutch biotechnology firm Pharming (PHAR.AS) were up 9 percent on Thursday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted a Orphan Drug designation for its recombinant human fibrinogen (rhFIB) drug.

By 1133 GMT, Pharming shares traded 9.2 percent higher at 3.45 euros. They had traded flat before the news.

The drug is being developed as a replacement therapy to treat bleeding in patients with fibrinogen deficiency.

Fibrinogen is a critical protein involved in the clotting of blood. Consequently, deficiency of fibrinogen can result in uncontrolled bleeding.

"The FDA Orphan Drug designation is reserved for promising new therapies being developed to treat diseases that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the United States," Pharming said in a statement.
