Alaska Air canceled about 14 flights on Wednesday over the same issue, which has resulted in nearly 2,500 cancellations at American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp, since Tuesday.

Delta Air Lines and Midwest Air Group also canceled flights over the checks to ensure that MD-80 wiring complies with a Federal Aviation Administration safety directive.

The Alaska Air MD-80 cancellations on Thursday affected departures from Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Anchorage, San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento.
