Dupuis scores late in overtime to seal Penguins victory
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pascal Dupuis scored with 10.8 seconds left in overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 home victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
Dupuis fired a slap shot from the left circle past goalie Antero Niittymaki to win the first meeting between the state rivals since Pittsburgh eliminated Philadelphia in last season's Eastern Conference finals.
Dupuis claimed his first point of the season as the normally high-scoring Penguins got goals from unlikely sources, Brooks Orpik and Mike Zigomanis also contributing their first goals of the campaign.
"That's what makes winning teams, everybody chipping in at different times," Dupuis told reporters. "It's nice to see other guys putting it in."
The Penguins improved to 2-1-1 and the Flyers (0-2-1) gained their first point in three games. It marked the first time the Flyers had lost three straight games to start a season since the 1995 labor dispute shortened season.
"Good teams find a way to win," Philadelphia captain Mike Richards said. "We're still looking for two points."
Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves for the Penguins, who squandered a 2-0 lead late in the second period and were out-shot 30-28.
"We have a lot of guys on this team who are contributing and that's a good thing," Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby said. "We know we'll start scoring more goals eventually."
Crosby was held without a goal for the fourth consecutive game and has just two assists this season. Evgeni Malkin, the other Pittsburgh sniper, has just one goal and two assists.
Orpik and Zigomanis scored for the Penguins 42 seconds part in the second period, but the Flyers answered back on goals by Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne in the final minute of the second period.
Pittsburgh moved into second place in the Atlantic Division standings, trailing the New York Rangers (5-0-0) by five points.
