Times sports veteran named ESPN ombudsman

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - ESPN has hired former New York Times sports editor Le Anne Schreiber as its ombudsman.

Schreiber replaces former Washington Post sports editor George Solomon, the network's first ombudsman who had been in the job for 21 months. She starts in early April.

Schreiber, who signed up for a two-year term, will serve as the connection between ESPN and the public, examining and critiquing the network's coverage and other areas and writing a column on ESPN.com at least once a month.

Schreiber was sports editor of the Times in the 1970s and in 1980 became deputy editor of the newspaper's Book Review. She turned to a book-writing and freelance journalism career in 1984. Schreiber has penned two memoirs and written for Life, Discover, the Yale Review and other publications.
