UPDATE 1-Innospec UK unit charged over Indonesia bribery case

(Adds detail, background)

LONDON, Feb 25 (Reuters) - U.S. specialty chemicals company Innospec Inc’s (IOSP.O) British unit has been charged with bribery and corruption following an investigation by Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

The SFO alleged on Thursday that Innospec Ltd had conspired to give corrupt payments in return for Indonesian government contracts to supply its anti-knock fuel additive Tetraethyl Lead between February 2002 and December 2006.

The case concerned bribery “on a significant scale”, the SFO said, adding the Ellesmere Port, Cheshire-based unit will appear before Southwark Crown Court on March 4.

Innospec Inc said in a U.S. regulatory filing earlier this month it anticipated settling foreign bribery charges with U.S. and British officials. [ID:nN19134483]

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission had notified the company it was looking into possible law violations in connection with the company’s involvement with the United Nations Oil for Food Program in Iraq. (Reporting by Rosalba O‘Brien; Editing by Dan Lalor)
