Two people died and many buildings were toppled after an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia's Mentawai Islands off Sumatra at the start of this week.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the government would compensate new victims of a mud volcano in Sidoarjo regency in East Java without funds from PT Lapindo Brantas, a company which has been accused of triggering the mudflow through oil drilling.

- POLICE SEIZED 600,000 ECSTASY PILLS

Jakarta police arrested six men of different nationalities and seized 600,000 ecstasy pills, estimated to be worth 60 billion rupiah ($6.63 million).
