DUSHANBE, Dec 22 (Reuters) - An avalanche killed at least 16 people in the mountains of Tajikistan on Saturday, a source in the Interior Ministry told Reuters.

The avalanche hit a road that connects the Central Asian state's capital Dushanbe with another city, Khudjand. It was not immediately clear how many people were trapped at the site, 70 km (44 miles) north of Dushanbe, the source said.

The ministry made no official comment on the death toll. (Reporting by Roman Kozhevnikov; writing by Olzhas Auyezov; editing by Sami Aboudi)
