ISTANBUL, July 14 (Reuters) - An accidental explosion of ammunition in southeast Turkey killed four soldiers, broadcasters NTV and CNN Turk reported on Tuesday.

The reports said the blast occurred in Hakkari province near the border with Iraq and Iran. No further details were immediately available.

A large Turkish military presence in southeastern Turkey has traditionally been the target of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), though Turkish military strikes have greatly weakened the group.

Some 40,000 have died in the conflict since 1984 when the PKK took up arms against the state to carve out an ethnic homeland in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey. (Reporting by Thomas Grove)
