Magnitude 6.8 quake hits off Japan - USGS
It said the quake, initially reported as a major magnitude 7.1 temblor, struck at 1645 GMT (1:45 a.m. local time) and was centered 56 miles (90 km) east of the city of Mito, north of Tokyo, in the Pacific Ocean. It was relatively shallow at 21.7 miles (35 km) deep.
It was part of series of quakes in the same area within a few hours.
