Magnitude 6.8 quake hits off Japan - USGS
WASHINGTON, May 7 (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit off the east coast of Japan's main Honshu island on Wednesday following a series of tremors in the same area in just a few hours, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
It said the quake, initially reported as a major magnitude 7.1 temblor, struck at 1645 GMT (1:45 a.m. local time) and was centered 56 miles (90 km) east of the city of Mito, north of Tokyo, in the Pacific Ocean. It was relatively shallow at 21.7 miles (35 km) deep.
It was part of series of quakes in the same area within a few hours.
