The explosion in a building at the Imperial Sugar Co (IPSU.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) plant in Port Wentworth, a suburb of the historic city of Savannah, occurred at around 8 p.m. local time (0100 GMT), police said, adding that the cause of the blast was not known.

"There were 50 to 100 casualties," police captain Ben Herron said. He gave no further details. (Editing by Eric Walsh)
