NEW YORK, March 15 (Reuters) - A construction crane fell on a residential building in Manhattan on Saturday, killing several people and injuring others, New York City police said.

A Reuters photographer on the scene said the crane had reduced a building of about four or five stories to rubble and several cars on the street were also under rubble.

"There's a rescue operation ongoing," a police spokesman said. "There are injuries. There are fatalities," he said, adding that he could not say how many at this point.

The building was on 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan between 1st and 2nd Avenues. (Reporting by Chip East, writing by Claudia Parsons, editing by Jackie Frank)
