SEOUL, May 16 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez said on Friday the beef agreement with South Korea did not need renegotiation in the face of growing public concern over the safety of the product in the Asian nation.

"We don't believe the agreement (on beef) needs to be renegotiated... beef that Koreans will receive from the U.S. is of the highest quality in the world second to none," Gutierrez told reporters in Seoul.

South Korea reached a deal with the United States last month to open its market wider to American beef but it delayed the resumption of imports this month due to strong public opposition to the deal. (Reporting by Jack Kim; Editing by Keiron Henderson)
