Magnitude 6.7 quake hits off Papua New Guinea -USGS

SINGAPORE, June 23 (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.7 quake hit off Papua New Guinea's island of New Ireland, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Tuesday.

A national disaster centre official based in Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, told Reuters by telephone there were no immediate reports of damage.

There were also no immediate warnings of a tsunami from the quake, the epicentre of which was 95 km (60 miles) south southeast of Taron, New Ireland, and at a depth of 35 km (21.7 miles).

The quake struck at 1419 GMT, the USGS said. It had initially reported the quake's magnitude as 7.0.

Ajat Sudrajat, an analyst at the meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency in Indonesia, which borders Papua New Guinea, told Reuters: "We have not received any report from our network abroad on the impact of the quake."
