TOKYO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Head of Japan's largest business lobby group wants the country to consider a so-called cap-and-trade system to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Thursday.

"It is important to discuss the matter, taking into account global trends, particularly in Europe and the United States," the paper quoted Japan Business Federation Chairman Fujio Mitarai as telling reporters.

Previously, the federation had opposed compulsory caps on emissions, arguing that allotting permits fairly was difficult, but a government official said one was being considered for Japan. [ID:nT365467] (Reporting by Risa Maeda)
