NEW DELHI, Oct 30 (Reuters) - India's state-owned MMTC Ltd (MMTC.BO) has issued an import tender for 10,000 tonnes of rice for delivery in mid-December at Haldia port on the east coast, the company said in a statement on Friday.

The tender closes on Nov. 9.

PEC Ltd, another state-owned company, will follow MMTC and is expected to issue a similar rice import tender later today, two government officials said.

"Delivery will be sought at Kakinada on the east coast through immediate shipment," they said.

Earlier the day, Reuters reported, quoting government sources, that India may import 30,000 tonnes of rice as the country seeks to prevent possible shortage after severe weather ravaged rice fields this year. [ID:nnSP443388] (Reporting by Ratnajyoti Dutta; Editing by John Mair)
