March 23 (Reuters) - Drive-in restaurant chain Sonic Corp (SONC.O) posted a 7 percent fall in second-quarter profit that missed Wall Street estimates as same-store sales dropped 3.6 percent.

For the quarter ended Feb. 28, Sonic posted a net income of $8.7 million, or 14 cents a share, including a gain of 6 cents a share from the purchase of debt at a discount.

It had reported a profit of $9.3 million, or 15 cents a share, a year earlier.

The company said it recently refranchised 90 additional partner drive-ins and used the proceeds to purchase about $25 million of its $559.5 million Class A-2 senior notes at a discount, the company said.

Oklahoma City-based Sonic's shares were trading at $10.15 after the bell. They closed at $9.28 Monday on Nasdaq.
