Russia can avoid crisis, emerge stronger-Medvedev

MOSCOW, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Russia has a chance to avoid a currency, banking and debt crisis and can emerge from the global financial trumoil with a more effective economy, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.

Medvedev said in a video blog posted on his web site www.kremlin.ru, that the government will support consolidation in the banking, retail and construction sectors. He also said the crisis will encourage banks to become more effective and companies to cut expenses. (Writing by Oleg Shchedrov; Editing by Christian Lowe)
