UPDATE 1-Mexico's Walmex Feb. same-store sales up 5.7 pct
(Adds details)
MEXICO CITY, March 8 (Reuters) - Same store sales at Wal-Mart de Mexico rose 5.7 percent in February, the top Mexican retailer said on Thursday, in line with forecasts and as reduced prices on staple products boosted volumes.
Same-store sales, which measure revenue only at stores open at least a year, rose 3.9 percent in February of 2006.
The retailer, also known as Walmex (WALMEXV.MX), said total February sales were 15.027 billion pesos ($1.345 billion), up 13.8 percent.
A Reuters poll of six analysts had predicted February same-store sales would rise by 5.6 percent.
Growth was driven by a low-price program that Walmex launched in late January, cutting prices on 7,500 products for at least 45 days.
Walmex may extend the program and reduce prices on around 10,000 products through the end of this month.
Walmex is controlled by U.S. retail company Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT.N).
