UPDATE 1-Telecom Argentina 1st-quarter profit doubles

BUENOS AIRES, May 9 (Reuters) - Telecom Argentina SA (TEC2.BA: Quote, Profile, Research), one of Argentina's top telephone companies, said on Friday first-quarter net profit doubled, on growth in its mobile phone and Internet businesses.

The company's net profit rose to 272 million pesos ($85 million), exceeding market expectations, from 135 million pesos a year ago.

Revenue climbed as the number of mobile telephone clients grew 18 percent to 12.6 million. Broadband clients rose 60 percent to 841,000, and the number of fixed lines grew 3 percent.

The company's net sales rose 21 percent from same period a year ago to 2.48 billion pesos.

Four analysts polled at Reuters, on average, forecast a net profit of 255.5 million pesos, with estimates ranging from 236 million to 266.6 million.
