Tyson Foods to cut about 190 jobs at poultry plant
CHICAGO, May 14 (Reuters) - U.S. meat company Tyson Foods Inc. (TSN.N) said on Wednesday it will eliminate about 190 jobs at its Glen Allen, Virginia, poultry processing plant as part of product changes scheduled there.
Overall production is not being reduced.
Tyson is the largest U.S. meat company and produces beef, pork and chicken.
"This project is part of an ongoing effort to optimize the use of our poultry plants by ensuring we are producing the right mix of products to meet the needs of our customers," Donnie King, Tyson's group vice president of operations, said in a statement.
The changes will take effect in mid June and the last day of work for the affected workers will be June 13. The positions being eliminated are in deboning and packaging.
Displaced employees will be encouraged to seek employment at other Tyson plants.
The Glen Allen complex includes a processing plant, feed mill, and hatchery, and currently employs about 800. (Reporting by Bob Burgdorfer; Editing by Christian Wiessner)
