UPDATE 1-Adidas snags Russian football deal from Nike
(Adds details and background)
FRANKFURT, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Adidas (ADSG.DE) has signed a deal to supply the Russian Football Union (RFU) until 2018, the world's second-largest sports goods maker said on Monday, snagging the contract from arch-rival Nike (NKE.N).
Adidas will supply all RFU national teams including the Olympic soccer team from this month. The new jerseys will be available in retail trade early next year, Adidas said.
Russia's national team will wear the new kit with the Adidas three-stripe logo for the first time against Wales on Wednesday in a World Cup qualifying match.
The RFU covers 2.5 million players, 44,000 clubs, 156,000 teams and 37,000 referees.
The Russia's national team rose to fame this year when they reached the semi-finals of the Euro 2008 championship before being beaten by Spain, who went on to win the tournament.
Adidas already works with the football unions of Argentina, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Nigeria and Spain as well as the hosts of the 2010 World Cup, South Africa. It gave no details on how much the deal was worth. (Reporting by Eva Kuehnen; Editing by Quentin Bryar)
