UPDATE 1-Mazda says to reverse some car output cuts

(Adds backgrounds, share prices)

TOKYO, March 13 (Reuters) - Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T), Japan’s fourth-largest carmaker, said on Friday it will reverse some cuts in car output in Japan in April.

Mazda would not reveal by how much or to what level it would restore production, a Mazda spokesman said.

Mazda halted production on all Fridays in February and March to bring down inventory, which had ballooned amid poor demand globally.

Mazda made 31,130 vehicles in Japan in January, down 66.2 percent from the same month a year ago. It would announce later this month its production volume for February.

Mazda shares soared 7.5 percent to 143 yen, outperforming the broader auto sector .ITEQP.T subindex, up 4.9 percent.

It said it will resume production on Fridays at two plants in Yamaguchi prefecture in southern Japan, neighbouring Hiroshima where its headquarters are located, as well as on the first and second Fridays at its main plants in Hiroshima. (Reporting by Yumiko Nishitani; Editing by Rodney Joyce)
